The current administration is showing all signs of a tyrannical administration, says former Maldivian president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Solih, a special advisor at the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), made the remark during a campaign event held at the Raalhugandu area of Male’ on Wednesday night.

Addressing the rally, Solih described the current administration as “a boat that is sailing backwards at high speed.”

Solih said that the administration was taking the country some 20 years back, and was showing all signs of a tyrannical administration.

“What was the first thing they did upon coming to power? They obstructed the press. But because of the democracy we introduced to this country and the freedom of expression we ensured, they were able to challenge and foil it,” he said.

“They are threatening people with job security. They are forcing employees to campaign for the government and get involved in the government’s campaign events.”

Noting the summons sent to MDP’s chairperson Fayyaz Ismail for questioning in a corruption investigation, Solih said that the administration is now targeting political leaders.

“There is no room for political activities. They are getting ready to arrest political leaders. Let me tell you. This isn’t stopping here. It will reach judges. They will even arrest the police commissioner. They will grab hold of independent institutions,” he said.

He accused the administration of engaging in efforts to usurp the powers of the Parliament from the very start.
