Six minors admitted positive for dengue fever

Amid growing cases of vector-borne diseases, Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) reports at least six children have been admitted for testing positive for dengue fever.

Pediatrician Ahmed Faisal, confirmed six children are receiving treatment at the hospital currently, with some of them requiring blood transfusions.

While reminding of the ailment's fatal nature, Faisal urged the public to take extra precaution against mosquitoes and mosquito bites.

The rise of dengue fever has been reported amid growing number of chikungunya cases, with more than 134 cases reported so far according to Health Protection Agency (HPA).

Symptoms of dengue fever are visible within four to ten days from mosquito bites. The symptoms include;

• Severe fever
• Headaches
• Joint pain
• Nausea

HPA meanwhile, has given instructions to public on preventive measures to counter dengue and other mosquito-related diseases. Preventive measures include;

• Concealing exposed areas of skin with proper clothes to avoid mosquito bites
• Usage of mosquito repellents, lotions, and sprays
• Keeping the doors and entrances to the house closed during peak hours for mosquito activity (dawn and dusk)
• Frequently drain content or material which could hold stagnant water

The agency also provided instructions on home remedies as well, which include taking proper rests, increase fluid intake such as tender coconuts, water, ORS or similar items.

HPA further advises usage of prescription medication or painkillers to dull joint and body pain. The agency also cautioned seeking doctor's assistance if the fever drags for three days or more.
