Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into a case involving a man fleeing after hitting a pedestrian with his motorcycle who was crossing the road from a crosswalk in Hulhumale’.
Police, on Friday, said they received the report of the accident at the crosswalk in front of ION shop in Nirolhu Magu, Hulhumale’ Phase II, at approximately 14:10pm last Monday.
The authority identified the victim in the accident as a 54-year-old Maldivian man. He sustained serious injuries in the accident and is currently being treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
Police said they have arrested Mohamed Nashiu, 20, Moonlight Villa, GA. Maamendhoo, in connection with the case. They identified him as the driver of the motorcycle who did not possess a driver’s license.
Nashiu was arrested under a court order on Thursday and has been remanded in custody for six days upon presentation before the court on Friday.
The case is under investigation by the Police.
There have been previous accidents where pedestrians crossing the crosswalk have been hit by vehicles. Some of these have resulted in fatalities.
