Sun has learned that former president Mohamed Nasheed has been nominated for a post in an international organization with the approval of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

Multiple sources have confirmed to Sun that the government has endorsed Nasheed for a top post in the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

According to the sources, the government has already issued a no-objection letter regarding Nasheed’s appointment. A senior official from Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has also verified this information.

Appointments to the position are made following consultations between the United Nations Secretary-General and the UNDP Executive Board, with the endorsement of the United Nations General Assembly.

Requirements for the position include experience and skills in sustainable development, leadership, and operational management.

Sun has been unsuccessful in its efforts, spanning days, to obtain an official comment from Nasheed and the government regarding the matters. The reports have not been denied no confirmed.

Nasheed has last held the post of Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF)’s secretary general.

He had assumed the post after announcing he was taking “a respite from active politics”. During this time, he has mostly resided in Ghana, where CVF’s headquarters is located.

Notably, Nasheed had recently expressed interest in returning to office. He rejoined MDP, alongside his supporters who defected MDP to form The Democrats ahead of 2023’s presidential election last Monday.

Speaking during a function held on Monday night to commemorate his return, Nasheed said he was happy to be back home. He affirmed that he remains committed to serving both MDP and the nation in the coming days while criticizing the government.
