The Male’ City Council has begun efforts to stop water leakage from buildings onto the streets in the capital, aiming to resolve the issue within this year.
The city’s Mayor Adam Azim on Sunday noted that the council’s Community Engagement Unit has been working on solving the issue of leaking water onto streets from buildings. Azim confirmed solving this issue across all the buildings in Buruzu Magu.
Head of the council’s Community Engagement Unit, Meekail Mohamed Riyaz said they visited 40 houses on Buruzu Magu with reports of leaking water onto streets, out of which they had discovered issues from 22 houses. Another 28 houses in the same road had written to the council requesting to solve the problem as well.
“We intend to visit every house with this issue and speak with their owners or residents to solve this problem entirely before the end of this year,” Meekail said.
“We need the full support of public in our efforts, and we can only be expeditious about this with their support. We would like to acknowledge ongoing support as well.”
Azim emphasized the importance of these efforts in maintaining cleanliness of the city’s roads and streets and added the initiative will only be successful with the support of the public.
Leaking water from residences is among the most reported issues in Male’ City – which is mostly from the outdoor units of air conditioners.
As part of protocol, the council first notifies the building in question and has discretion to fine the building’s owner with no less than MVR 500 for a first-time offence.
