State Electric Company (STELCO) expects to finish the rollout of smart meters in place on analogue meters by the end of September, says Hussain Fahmy, the managing director of the state utility company.

In a post on X on Wednesday morning, Fahmy said the company is making the latest preparations to install smart meters and introduce a mobile app which will enable customers to monitor daily electricity usage via their mobile phones.

“By the Grace of Almighty Allah, the meters of all STELCO customers will be changed to smart meters by the end of September. With the smart application for the smart meters, customers will be able to monitor their electricity usage on a weekly, daily and even an hourly basis,” he said.

Fahmy said the biggest benefit of smart meters is that customers will be able to monitor their electricity usage and implement energy saving measures.

According to Fahmy, the app will also allow customers to pay for multiple bills at once, and communicate with the company’s staff.

STELCO launched the project to introduce a smart grid to modernize electricity services in the Maldives back in August last year.

The introduction of smart meters is expected to put an end to allegations that STELCO serves inflated utility bills.
