Ooredoo connects first Maldives resort with submarine cable

Ooredoo has achieved a historic milestone in Maldivian telecommunications by connecting the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi Resort with a submarine cable, marking the first time a resort in the archipelago has received such advanced connectivity.

The submarine cable will link through Ithaafushi and Maafushi to Ooredoo's data center in Hulhumale, significantly enhancing internet speeds and providing world-class connectivity to the resort. Ooredoo has hailed this as a pivotal achievement in the nation's telecommunications development.

A ceremony was held to mark the occasion, attended by Tourism and Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, Ooredoo Maldives CEO Khalid Hassan Al-Hamadi, and Ithaafushi General Manager TJ Joulak.

During the ceremony, Ooredoo CEO Khalid highlighted the company's leading role in the Maldivian telecommunications industry, emphasizing its introduction of world-class technology and its integration into the local culture and lifestyle. He stated that connecting a resort with a submarine cable represents a major step towards bridging the digital divide and fostering future-ready communities. Khalid also noted that the resort is now equipped with AI-powered features and private 5G infrastructure, ready to offer next-generation digital experiences to visitors.

Minister Thoriq commended Ooredoo's efforts to ensure digital inclusion and accessibility in its development initiatives.

TJ Joulak, General Manager of Ithaafushi, expressed the resort's pleasure in hosting the event and acknowledged the crucial role of connectivity in meeting the evolving needs of travelers seeking luxury and personalized service.

This project coincides with Ooredoo's 20th anniversary of contributing to the telecommunications sector in the Maldives, underscoring the company's commitment to developing a digitally advanced Maldives.
