The Civil Court has initiated a civil suit against former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb due to his failure to pay a MVR 1 million fine related to the MMPRC corruption case.
The Civil Court had previously ordered Adeeb to pay this sum to the state within one month, an order issued on the last day of last year. However, Adeeb did not comply with this judgment.
The Attorney General's Office confirmed on Monday that the state has now filed the civil suit, and the matter is currently in the implementation phase.
Adeeb was sentenced to 20 years in jail for his graft conviction in the MMPRC scandal. In addition to the jail term, he was also ordered to pay a MVR 2 million fine to the government, with MVR 1 million of this fine due within one month of October 5, 2020. Adeeb's counsel had previously stated that paying the lump sum in one go would be difficult.
The MMPRC scandal occurred during the tenure of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. After assuming office, former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih placed former MMPRC Managing Director Abdulla Ziyath and Adeeb under house arrest, committing to investigate the matter. Subsequently, Solih granted pardons to both individuals, which is why Adeeb now resides abroad.
The Prosecutor General’s Office has since annulled immunity agreements for several suspects, including Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor, Ahmed Ishfah Ali, Mohamed Allam Latheef, and Mohamed Hussain. This action follows the 2022 termination of an immunity agreement with former MMPRC Managing Director Abdulla Ziyath.
