Bank of Maldives (BML)’s CEO Mohamed Shareef states the bank is targeting to establish self-service banking ATMs across an additional 56 islands within the upcoming two to three months and complete the project.
The new ATMs are being established as part of ‘Mulhi Raajje ah BML ATM’ initiative launched in 2024, aimed at expanding ATM services to all residential islands of the Maldives by the end of this year.
Speaking at B. Maalhos last Thursday after launching ATM service across all residential islands in Baa Atoll, Shareef said the bank first introduced ATM services in the Maldives in 2000.
In this regard, he detailed that the first ATM was established in capital Male’, while ATMs were rolled out of atolls in 2007, after seven years. He noted that in 2007 alone, ATMs were established on 19 islands, followed by establishment of ATMs across 68 islands between 2008 and 2023.
Meanwhile, ATMs were established in nine islands in 2024, he added.
As such, at the end of 2024, BML was providing ATM services across 96 residential islands in the Maldives apart from capital Male’.
According to Shareef, BML has established ATMs across 47 islands so far this year. Moreover, ATMs have been established at all residential islands in seven atolls: Dhaalu, Haa Alifu, Noonu, Shaviyani, Kaafu and Baa.
Shareef added that the bank is prepared to commence ATM service at 23 islands in five atolls, with plans to successfully conclude the project within the upcoming two to three months by introducing ATM service in the remaining 33 islands across seven atolls.
The bank’s CEO said the establishment of ATMs across the islands will allow residents to easily access banking services.
