Over MVR 32,000 stolen from elderly couple’s home in Thakandhoo

H. A. Thakandhoo: Over MVR 32,000 stolen from elderly couple's house in Thakandhoo.

Thieves broke into the home of an elderly couple above the age of 65 in HA. Thakandhoo and stole over MVR 32,000.

The couple resides in the house alone.

A source who spoke to Sun said the theft at the elderly couple’s house — located on the northern side of the island and slightly secluded from other residences — took place on Tuesday evening, coinciding with the time the couple usually goes to the harbor.

According to the source, the couple left the house after locking the rooms and hiding the key at a certain place in the house. It is believed that the theft was carried out by an individual or a group that is well-aware of the couple’s routine as the rooms where the money was kept was entered without breaking the lock.

“The money was kept inside a travel bag. That bag is locked as well. The money was stolen by breaking the lock,” the source said.

The source said the couple could not specify the exact amount of money that was stolen however, estimated it to be over MVR 32,000. The source said the elderly couple were keeping such a large amount of money in cash in case of emergency such as a health issue and to easily purchase items or make payments when getting a third party to work on their house.

While there in police station in Thakandhoo at present, upon reporting the theft, officers have attended to scene to obtain further information and taken samples.

Police said the theft is under investigation by the authority.

While no arrests have been made in connection with the case so far, the stolen money has not been recovered either. Such crimes are not common in Thakandhoo. Although there are individuals suspected of abusing drugs on the island, other types of crime are not common in Thakandhoo.

Although over 900 people are registered to Thakandhoo, only a couple of hundred people actually reside Ion the island. The decrease in population has been attributed to the migration of Thakandhoo people to Male’ for education and jobs.
