Court releases Hussain following arrest for disobeying police order

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s National Council member Hussain Hassan: Court released Hussain during remand hearing who was arrested for disobeying police order.

Criminal Court, on Thursday, has released main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s National Council member Hussain Hassan who was arrested last night for allegedly disobeying a police order during a counter-narcotics operation and taking pictures.

Hussain was presented before the Criminal Court on Thursday for a remand hearing, during which the police sought to extend his custody. However, the court ordered his release.

The Court has instructed Hussain to cooperate with the Police in their investigation.

Police, last night, said  Hussain was arrested after being cautioned for forcing his way into the scene of a counter-narcotics operation and taking photos in a manner that obstructed officers from their responsibilities.

In this regard, Police added that he had ignored the caution and attempted to take photos of the evidence at the scene.

As such, the Police said he was arrested on suspicion of disobeying a police order and obstruction of justice.

MDP had called to release Hussain. The party, via a post on X, said excessive force was used during his arrest and called on authorities to stop intimidating political figures.

Hussain, who previously worked as a journalist, represents Villingili constituency in MDP’s National Council.
