Police have seized 33 mobile phones from Maafushi Prison after some prisoners were found to be involved in scam cases.

Police said in a statement that they found prisoners to be involved in some of the scam cases reported to them.

Therefore, police conducted an operation in the prison last Thursday.

The operation seized 33 mobile phones of various brands, as well as ear pods, headsets, phone charging cables and SIM cards.

Police investigation is ongoing and they plan to conduct more such operations in collaboration with the Maldives Correctional Service to reduce scam cases.

Scam cases have increased recently. With modern technology, various techniques are used to extort money from people.

Therefore, police set up an anti-scam center on March 17 to deal with such cases. The center is working to raise awareness about scams through various social media platforms.

Prisoners have been accused of involvement in scams and various measures have been taken to prevent the smuggling of prohibited items into the prison.
