Supreme Court has informed the case form filed with the court for impeachment of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is incomplete, and has asked for the necessary administrative procedures to be completed, says the opposition coalition.
The impeachment motion was filed by former Maldivian President Mohamed Nasheed, former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, leader of Jumhoory Party Qasim Ibrahim and leader of Adhaalath Party Imran Abdulla.
A leading member of the team of attorney’s representing the opposition leaders denied rumors the request for the impeachment has been rejected by the Supreme Court.
“The Supreme Court instructed this morning to complete some administrative procedures and re-submit it,” said the attorney.
The court has made no comment to the media regarding the rumors.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed tweeted this Tuesday that the opposition was working on completing the necessary administrative procedures as instructed by the Supreme Court.
Nasheed additionally tweeted that the opposition was pushing to impeach President Yameen because of alleged embezzlement and corruption by him, and that he was no longer fit to lead the country.
Article 100 of the Constitutions states a President or Vice President can only be impeached with two-third of votes from the parliament.
The Supreme Court announced in May, 2017 that the final say on any impeachment votes taken by the parliament will be made by the Supreme Court.
