Adheeb receives contempt of the court with 15 days in jail

Former Vice President, Ahmed Adheeb Abdul Gafoor has been sentenced to 15 days in jail by the Criminal Court after finding him in contempt.

The hearing at the court today focused on the bribery and influencing official procedure charges against the former Vice President. Both hearings were held behind closed doors.

Sources say that Adheeb was held in contempt after disobeying the judge and raising his voice at inside the courtroom.

After the sentence was passed, Adheeb apologized by the Judge, Ali Adam did not comment on it further.

Lawyer of the accused, Moosa Siraj said that if the trial is being held outside the laws, it should not be allowed to continue.

Law of the Courts allow judges to pass sentences on contempt against the court. Punishments allowed for contempt a jail sentence of no more than 15 days and/or a fine of no more than MVR 10,000 along with house arrests of less than a month.
