Prosecutor General’s Office has asked the Presidential Commission on Deaths and Disappearances (DDCOM) to further complete its investigations. The office requested the Commission to resend the cases it investigated after completing the investigations

The PG office stated that it had not decided that it wouldn’t bring charges against those accused in the three cases submitted by the DDCOM and was merely requesting the commission to fulfill the missing parts of the investigations that were noticed by the PG office.

“After assessing the cases submitted by the DDCOM, we noticed that there were some areas where the investigation was not fully complete. We sent the cases back and requested the Commission to complete its investigations regarding these areas before we can bring charges forward in the cases.” read a statement by the PG Office.

The DDCOM’s investigation found that the same extremist group led by Mazeed and Saamith were behind the murders of Dr. Afrasheem Ali, Yaamin Rasheed, and Ahmed Rilwan Abdulla.

The group operating as a branch of Al Qaeda used “cells” of men trained to carry out extremist acts, according to the findings of the DDCOM. Yaamin Rasheed and Ahmed Rilwan were murdered by these cells, while Dr. Afrasheem was killed by members of a local criminal gang hired on a contract basis. All three men were murdered due to differences in religious ideologies.

The report formulated on the murder of Ahmed Rilwan Abdulla showed that the creation and announcement of Islamic State (IS) by the now-dead Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi, resulted in the Al Qaeda branch operating in the Maldives splitting into two. One that pledged allegiance to IS and the other which remained with Al Qaeda.

The residence of Mazeed, one of the men named in the report, was raided by the authorities following the report. It is not known if the Police raided the residence of Saamith.
