Record breaking no. of tourist arrivals to Maldives yesterday

The Maldives has once again broken its record for most tourist arrivals since it reopened its borders on July 15.

Yesterday, was the day with the highest number of tourist arrivals to the Maldives since the Maldives reopened its borders following the pandemic lockdown. 

Tourism Ministry statistics show that the Maldives received 4,179 arrivals including the 100,000th tourist to arrive in the Maldives since the border reopening. From December 1-12, the Maldives, the world’s leading travel destination has now received 27,416 tourist arrivals, which is an average of 2,285 tourists. 

In total, the Maldives has received 486,404 tourists in 2020. This includes the 103,557 tourist arrivals since the border reopening.

Russia remains at the top of the market in terms of tourist arrivals with 21,856 arrivals, or roughly 21 percent of all tourist arrivals. India comes second with 15,774 tourists while the UK and the USA come third and fourth with 9,857 tourists and 6,3342 tourists respectively. A total of 5,275 tourists have also been recorded from the UAE. These numbers were recorded after the border reopening and is not inclusive of arrivals before the lockdown.

Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) also stated that yesterday was the day with the highest recorded air traffic and passenger movements since the border reopening. Currently, the Maldives has 416 operational tourist facilities with a bed capacity of 37,859.
