Indian who attacked elderly local inside mosque to be deported

An Indian national accused of attacking an elderly person inside a mosque in Hulhuamel’ is to be deported by Maldivian authorities. 

Police stated that the investigation into the incident was closed last week and sent to the Prosecutor General’s Office. Police said that the decision to deport the man was by the PG Office. 

The man has now been handed over to the Immigration Services. 

The PG Office stated in the matter that the decision to deport the man was based on the type of the offense, injuries sustained, criminal records of the perpetrator, events of the incident. 

The PG Office also added that discussions were held with the elderly local who was subject to the attack and that the opinion of the investigative body was also to deport the attacker. 

The PG Office further stated that the decision to deport the man was not something new when dealing with cases of criminal activity by expatriates. 

The PG Office stated that such decisions were not based on the nationality of the individual who committed the crime. 

The incident happened on January 15. Police were reported that the man attacked the elderly local inside the mosque due to a bad odor. The man had reportedly attacked the elderly by forcefully evicting the elderly man from the mosque. Others at the scene intervened to apprehend the man from further harming the elderly.
