2 gang members detained for violent altercations

Two individuals related to gangs in Male’ City have been detained due to the possibility that they may cause violence. 

The two men were initially arrested last Sunday in relation to violence observed in the capital. According to police, five individuals were arrested, including three minors. 

The two detained are Aiham Shareef (19) from M. Arifa Manzil and Ali Riyaash Mohamed (18) from M. Aishamanzil. Aiham is accused of gang violence with the use of weaponry and Riyaash is accused of violence with the use sharp objects. 

The Criminal Court ordered the two to be detained for a period of five days. The Court cited a danger to the community and took into account evidence presented by the Police linking them with the crime they are accused of. 

Police later stated that the two individuals belong to a gang of Male’ City and that intel was received that the gangs were trying to cause more violence. 

Aiham, during the court session yesterday said that he had no connections with the violence and was taking an injured person to Vilimale’ when he was arrested. The injured person was involved in a violent altercation in Male’ City. Aiham said that he was a school student and the court ordered police to verify the statement. Aiham has no previous criminal records. 

Riyaash said that two of his friends were injured in a violent altercation and had attended the scene to take one of the injured to Vilimale’. Riyaash has been accused of gang violence previously. 

In total, four instances of gang violence were observed in Male’ on Sunday. Some of those injured were taken to hospitals. One has been admitted to the ICU of IGMH.
