Health authorities have lifted monitoring measures in Addu – the second most populous city in Maldives.

Addu City Mayor Ali Nizar told Sun on Monday evening that COVID-19 cases in the city have remained under control for over a month.

“It has been a week since we have seen any direct contacts. The monitoring status was lifted following random testing in all districts,” he said.

Nizar said Addu still has active cases, and that the council is enforcing preventive measures.

“We are monitoring travelers who come in both via air and sea. We urge that resident refrain from going out unless absolutely necessary. To minimize movements and refrain from holding gatherings. And to wash hands frequently and to wear masks,” he said.

Nizar so that though Addu is no longer under monitoring, public Eid celebrations will not be held in accordance with Health Protection Agency (HPA)’s instructions.

Addu City was placed under monitoring in May after an individual who went to a flu clinic in Hithadhoo district tested positive for COVID-19. More cases were soon discovered in additional districts of the city.

Addu lifted the curfew in all districts except for Hithadhoo in June, and rolled back the more restrictions in all districts, including Hithadhoo, earlier this July.

The city has 70 active cases, including two new cases confirmed over the last 24 hours.
