Nasheed’s lawyers: Nasheed ready to give a statement on May 6 attack

Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed’s lawyers have stated that Nasheed is ready to give a statement in connection to the IED attack targeting him on May 6.

A letter sent by Nasheed’s lawyers to Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem today – stated that Nasheed is ready to give a statement for the investigation into the IED attack targeting him on May 6, as per the Prosecutor General Office’s request.

The lawyers also added that Nasheed wished to give his statement prior to the conclusion of preliminary hearings of those who have been charged in connection to the case.

During a press conference held earlier regarding the May 6 attack, Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem had stated that his office had not received a statement from Nasheed for the case yet – stressing that a statement from him is integral for the investigation.

MAY 6 ATTACK

A homemade remote-controlled IED was strapped to a motorcycle parked nearby Nasheed’s residence, and was detonated at 08:27 pm on May 6, just as Nasheed, 54, exited his residence and went to get in his car. Nasheed was thrown to the ground and sustained multiple shrapnel wounds, while three members of his security detail and two bystanders sustained minor wounds.   

Police have arrested 10 suspects in connection to the case, and requested the Prosecutor General’s Office for charges against 5 suspects

Charges against four of the suspects were filed on August 3. They are:

  • Adhuham Ahmed Rasheed, 26, Hiyaa, V. Thinadhoo  
  • Mujaz Ahmed, 21, Ma. Feyruge, K. Male'  
  • Thahmeen Ahmed, 32, Folheyma, GA. Kondey  
  • Ali Haisham, 27, Nooreege, N. Manadhoo 

Hearings have also commenced in the cases against them in August as well.
