Men accused of attacking MP Jabir remanded in custody for 7 days

The two suspects arrested for attacking Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir in a visit to AA. Mathiveri earlier this week has been remanded in custody of the police. 

A police spokesperson told Sun this Saturday that the court has ordered for both suspects to be remanded in custody of the police for seven days. 

The two suspects - identified as a 19-year-old male and a 42-year-old male – were arrested by police last Wednesday. 

According to local residents who spoke to Sun, Jabir was attacked by a group of angry young men when travelled to Mathiveri on Tuesday evening.  

Jabir was taken into protective custody by the police in response to the incident. 

While some locals claimed Jabir was attacked, Mathiveri Council’s president Ahmed Aslam told Sun Jabir was not injured, and denied any such incident took place. 

An angry Jabir claimed at the parliamentary sitting on Wednesday morning that there were members of the international terror network ISIS operating in Mathiveri, and that it was not safe for any Maldivian to travel to Mathiveri.
