The Pakistani man wanted for the murder of a waiter at a restaurant in suburban Hulhumale’ on Saturday was arrested after an hours-long manhunt from the beach area of Hulhumale’ Phase II.

The victim, identified by police as a Bangladeshi male, was found stabbed to death inside Khanji, a popular restaurant in Hulhumale’ where he worked as a waiter, on Saturday evening.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Hulhumale' Hospital.

Police have identified Muhammad Abid, 26, a Pakistani national who worked as a chef at the restaurant, as the suspect.

The murder had been prompted by a disagreement inside the restaurant’s kitchen, as the staff prepared meals for iftar.

Abid had fled the scene after attacking his colleague, prompting the police to release his picture. Police warned he was dangerous, and urged the public not to approach him and call 119 if seen.

A police spokesperson said Abid was arrested from the beach area of the newly populated Hulhumale’ Phase II on early Sunday.

The murder prompted concerned Bangladeshi nationals to gather, first outside Khanji, and later outside the Bangladesh High Commission, calling for justice for the victim.

The case is under investigation by the Serious and Organized Crime Department.
