Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed has accused South Henveiru MP Hussain Shaheem (Andhun Hussain) of obstructing the investigation of the terror attack against himself on May 6 of last year.

A text message sent to Parliament’s Whatsapp group by Nasheed on Sunday night alleged Andhun Hussain’s participation in covering up the case launched regarding the attack. In his messages, Nasheed had also implied Andhun Hussain was acting so under the instruction of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

“I am saying (this) because I know. One individual who assisted the government in covering this up is Andhun Hussain,” he had said.

Responding to the allegations against him, Andhun Hussain said that Nasheed must be well aware he cannot impede the investigation of the case.

“I have not said anything, anywhere to obstruct from finding the truth. Even in the meetings of 241 Committee, when I worked (in the committee). This is defamation,” he had said.

Parliamentarians who clapped back at Andhun Hussain’s response include North Maafannu MP Imthiyaz Fahumy (Inthi). Inthi, who is currently contesting for the post of MDP’s chairperson, said that the investigation of the attack against Nasheed was obstructed whilst an MDP administration stood in power.

Responding to Inthi, Andhun Hussain underscored that Inthi is Vice President of MDP’s Disciplinary Committee. On this note, he had questioned why any action was not taken against members who had not shown up for the national council meeting to obstruct the investigation.

“Without doing such a small thing, you are rowing to become the chairperson of this major party,” he added.

Nasheed had responded to Andhun Hussain by stating what was being addressed was the failure to investigate an IED attack and not an election.

In response, Andhun Hussain said that these cases can be investigated by Parliament’s Judiciary Committee to which Nasheed had remarked Andhun Hussain had obstructed all the parliamentary committees at the instruction of President Solih.

A homemade remote-controlled IED was strapped to motorcycle parked nearby Parliament Speaker, former President Mohamed Nasheed’s residence, and was detonated at 08:27 pm on May 6, 2021, just as Nasheed exited his residence and went to get in his car. Nasheed was thrown to the ground and sustained multiple shrapnel wounds, while three members of his security detail and two bystanders sustained minor wounds.

Many senior government officials have been accused of negligence in connection to the attack. In this regard, Defense Ministry Mariya Ahmed Didi is accused of being negligent in taking adequate measures to prevent the attack having received prior intel.
