Former Home Minister Umar Naseer on Sunday attributed the increase in crimes such as theft and the society no longer being safe to the failure in enforcing Islamic Shariah.

Speaking with Sun, Umar expressed concern over the brutal murder of Shiaau Mohamed Saeed, Kuri, Fuvahmulah City.

He went on to note that murdering without any hesitation and other illicit acts such as drug traffic and trade, homosexuality has become common due to going against the principles and teachings of Islam.

Umar, who has announced that he would be contesting in the upcoming Presidential Elections as an independent candidate stated that Maldivians will see a government with the courage to hold on to Islamic Shariah as the means to resolve issues such as murder.

“That day crimes like murder, theft, drugs, and rape will be completely stopped and Maldivians will witness a peaceful and happy nation. God willing, that day is not far away.”

He went on to note that enforcing Islamic Shairah does not only mean cutting limbs and that it is linked with education and children’s upbringing.

“The laws need to be shaped in accordance with Islamic Shariah. This need to be done in order to end big crimes like slaying people without any hesitation.”

Furthermore, he stressed that those convicted of drug-related crimes also need to be punished as per Islamic Shariah. He added that otherwise, Maldives would never get rid of the issue.

Umar has been vocal about enforcing Shirah since back when he was holding office.

Hence, during former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s tenure, a regulation as to enforcing capital punishment was put together and published in the gazette as well.
