Tender opened for installation of Battery Energy Storage Systems at 19 islands

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Technology has opened tender for the installation of battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at 19 islands across the Maldives.

The installation is taking place as part of the Ministry’s Accelerating Renewable Energy Integration and Sustainable Energy (ARISE) project, supported by the World Bank.

In this regard, the Ministry is seeking contractors for installation of 40 MWh capacity BESS across designated islands at 10 atolls.

The BESS will be developed on an Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPC) basis with two years of operations and maintenance support.

A pre-qualification tender was rolled out back in last month for the same work. However, unfavorable outcomes resulted in the pre-qualification process was cancelled following which the Ministry is proceeding for a direct tender.

The island which BESS will be installed at:

  1.       Addu City (All interconnected islands including Hulhudhoo/Meedhoo)
  2.       Fuvahmulah City
  3.      Kulhudhuffushi City
  4.      GDh. Thinadhoo
  5.       GA. Villingili
  6.       B. Eydhafushi
  7.       Lh. Hinnavaru
  8.      Lh. Naifaru
  9.      Sh. Funadhoo
  10.     L. Fonadhoo
  11.     L. Gan
  12.      L. Hithadhoo
  13.     L. Maamendhoo
  14.     L. Kunahandhoo
  15.     L. Maabaidhoo
  16.    L. Dhanbidhoo
  17.    L. Maavah
  18.    L. Isdhoo
  19.    L. Kalaidhoo

The deadline to submit applications for the tender is before 1:00pm on Thursday, October 27.

Environment Ministry said that the BESS installations will support high renewable energy penetration for the island grids and ensure efficient operation of existing diesel generators needed in a solar PV/diesel hybrid generation mix.

They also underscored the funding support for installation of BESS includes a USD 23 million concessional loan awarded to Maldivian government from the Clean Technology Fund.
