Former Attorney General Aishath Azima Abdul Shakoor has announced her decision to endorse Maldives National Party’s (MNP) leader and presidential candidate Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim in the upcoming presidential elections.

In a statement announcing her decision to support Nazim, Azima said that it was high time to give the opportunity for a new generation of leaders and new visions. Noting Nazim had worked closely alongside her during many turmoils faced by the state, she expressed her confidence in Nazim to revive the country from the state it is presently in, protect the basis rights of citizens and set the country on the right path.

She also said that Nazim, during his time in the government, listened to the voices of youths and elderly in addition to people who held different opinions. Azima added that Nazim was a leader who had a ‘clean slate’. She expressed confidence that he would abide by these characteristics in an administration of his own.

The former attorney general also revealed that she worked alongside Nazim for over two months in drafting his campaign’s policies and other election-related works. Azima, noting she believes it to be everyone’s responsibility to save the country from the ditch it is falling into, said this can only be achieved by prioritizing logic and dedicatedly working.

Prior to this, in her political career, Azima had affiliated with the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) where she worked alongside former president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.
