Pregnancy of a minor in a southern island comes to light

The pregnancy of a young girl from a southern Maldivian island has come to light.

The story was shared on social media by the mother of the 15-year-old girl.

Summarizing the events leading up to pregnancy, the mother said a group of men from the island attempted to abort the baby after getting her daughter pregnant, which was brought to her knowledge following a failed attempt at a medicine-induced abortion.

Police have not confirmed the statement made by the mother.

However, they said the pregnancy of a minor below the age of 18 from an island in the southern region was reported to the authority on October 6^th – following which they have launched an investigation.
