Waste management centers to be established at 100 islands before end of this year

Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim states waste management centers will be established across 100 islands before the end of this year.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday regarding the tasks that have been bestowed upon the Environment Ministry under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu ‘Hafutha 14’ or the first 100-day pledges – Minister Thoriq highlighted the announcement and the implementation of a nationwide project to establish waste centres across islands as one of the President’s pledges.

The Minister states waste management centres will be established across 54 islands for the first time under this project while the renovations of existing waste sites across 44 islands will be further developed.

He noted that the resources required for waste management will be provided to the islands.

“Equipment required for 100 islands and vehicles for waste transportation will be provided under this program during this year,” he said.

Minister Thoriq said seven regions will be categorized into zones in the implementation of this project under the waste management policy.

He added that regional waste management centres will be established in three main regions.

They include:

  • R. Vandhoo Waste Management Centre
  • K. Thilafushi Waste Management Centre
  • Waste management centre being developed in Addu City

As per the Minister, the waste management centres in Vandhoo and Thilafushi will be developed further while the waste management centre being developed in Addu City will be completed by 2027.

Speaking further, Minister Thoriq highlighted further projects in the pipeline for this year including paving the way for increased opportunities to install solar panels to reduce the electricity bills of Maldivian households and reduce the usage of electricity generated from oil and paving the way for increased opportunities for private individuals and businesses in the efforts to sustainably destroy waste across island and atolls.
