85 Male' City buildings report flooding

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) confirmed at least 85 buildings in Male' City reported sustaining various damages owing to non-stop rainfall on Saturday morning.

Six out of these buildings have sustained damages rendering them unhospitable. 

NDMA said it was working with Maldives Red Crescent, conducting rapid assessments of the damaged properties. The authority further confirmed installing 241 sand-bag barrages in 41 houses to block the water.

Male' City experienced heavy and non-stop rainfall accompanied with the occasional thunder and lightning. Due to the heavy rain, roads and streets of Male' City have been flooded while some of the residences reported flooding with damage to property.

Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) and other relevant agencies were actively working to drain the water following Saturday's rain.

Flooding on the streets and residences is common for Male' City during heavy rain, and requires a permanent solution.

Maldives Meteorological Center (MET Office) forecast heavy rainfull throughout the country, which is likely to carry forward for the upcoming week.

It also forecast rainfall from Haa Alifu to Laamu atoll from 20:00hrs until 00:00hrs on Saturdaye evening, and issued a yellow alert for the area.
