1,044 accidents in first four months; 335 more than previous year

1,044 road accidents took place in the first four months of this year, which is 335 accidents more than the same period last year.

According to the quarterly statistics published on the police website, total 709 road accidents were reported within the first four months of 2023.

Accident stats (2023):

  • January: 149
  • February: 196
  • March: 190
  • April: 174

Accident stats (2024):

  • January: 263
  • February: 268
  • March: 301
  • April: 212

In both 2023 and 2024, the highest number of accidents were reported from police stations in Male’ City, Hulhumale’ and Vilimale’.

Between January and April this year, the police received reports of 1,009 accidents in the greater Male area – a sharp increase compared to the 671 accidents reported during the same period last year.

Outside of the capital, road accidents were most reported from southern Maldives, comprising of GA. Atoll, GDh. Atoll, Addu City and Fuvahmulah City.

23 accidents were reported from the region this year, compared to the 18 reported the previous year.

Most of the accidents reported from Male’ involve reckless driving. Accidents are also common on the Sinamale’ Bridge, which links Male’ City with Hulhumale’ and Hulhule’ – where the national airport is located. Some of these accidents have resulted in fatalities.

And in the south, reckless driving on the Addu Link Road and the roads of Fuvahmulah have resulted in life-threatening injuries.
