The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) launched its annual ‘Madhirin Rakka’ campaign on Wednesday in Hulhumale’ to address the escalating mosquito problem threatening public health.

This initiative targets the identification and elimination of mosquito breeding sites, a critical step as mosquito-borne diseases like dengue have surged across the Maldives in recent years. With these illnesses spread by daytime-active mosquitoes such as Aedes mosquitoes, the campaign serves as a vital precaution to safeguard Hulhumale’ residents.

The campaign, running until August 17, features strategic fogging at 5:00 AM and 5:30 PM daily.

These times are chosen to maximize effectiveness: Aedes mosquitoes, which are known to transmit diseases like dengue and chikungunya, are most active around sunrise and sunset.

HDC is actively cleaning breeding grounds, applying chemical treatments, and partnering with the Ministry of Health and Health Protection Agency to control the spread. The corporation has also noted that stagnant water—common in yards and urban areas—fuels mosquito breeding, particularly after recent rains.

Residents are encouraged to support the effort by clearing water buildup in and around their homes.

HDC’s ongoing collaboration with health authorities underscores its commitment to making Hulhumale’ a safer, healthier community.
