There is nothing to be gained from influencing the Maldives Police Service, says former Commissioner of Police, State Minister at Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure Hussein Waheed.
Speaking to “Sun” regarding rumors the chain of command within the police force has been broken and that he is running a police command center out of the former UN Building, Hussein Waheed said he saw no reason to take such action.
He said that nothing can be gained from influencing the police force.
“We need to first think about what kind of people are spreading these rumors in the media, who they are receiving their financial backing from. I have nothing to gain from something like this,” said Hussein Waheed.
He said the Maldives Police Service was too professional to be influenced by outside forces. And that the institute had a strong leader in Commissioner of Police Ahmed Areef.
“The current top officials at the police are very capable. And every officer at the institute is smart and brave. They know how to operate within the law,” said Hussein Waheed.
He said that the police force was the first target whenever the political situation gets turbulent because the institute was the strongest. He said that though people allege he is influencing the police, he is busy making President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s development projects a reality.
“I have no authority over the police now. My current responsibility is to support the Housing Minister’s work in President Yameen’s development projects,” said Hussein Waheed.
He said he believed the hype in social media of alleged connection between him and the Maldives Police Service
He said he took the attempt to portray over the social media that he, even now, has connections with the Maldives Police Service, is acceptance of his service for the institution. He said such rumors were spread about people who have provided their services to the country, in some way or other.
