The Maldives Police Service has stated that a foreigner who committed suicide last week while in police custody was a citizen of the United Kingdom who was detained under drug-related offenses.

Police today stated that two people were arrested after attempting to traffic 3.4 kgs of drugs into the Maldives around late April, in an operation run in coordination with Maldives Customs.

The operation lasted for eight days and saw the arrest of a 30-year old male UK national and a 43-year old male Thai national.

Police specified that upon a search of the UK national's belongings, two rubber packets suspected of containing drugs were found.

The individual later committed suicide by hanging himself while in police custody at the Vilimale' Detention Facility. A court in the Maldives had ordered the detention of the man for a period of 30 days. The Thai national's detention was set for a period of 15 days.

Police said that they were looking into the suicide in coordination with the relevant state bodies and were also investigating the drug trafficking case.
