Police are investigating a man for the rape and sexual abuse of his girlfriend’s 12-year-old daughter.

A source from within the family who spoke to Sun said the man had been abusing the young girl, who lives in Male’ City, since she was nine years old.

“It began when the girl’s mother was quarantined for 29 days in a resort after she tested positive for Covid. No one in the family was in Male’ at that time so she left the girl with him,” said the source.

The family member said that the young girl was intimidated into remaining silent.

The abuse came to light after she shared her ordeal with a cousin.

“She gave all the details after she moved to her grandmother’s. Because she was scared, she might get attacked if she shared it when living there,” said the source.

The family is concerned over lack of arrest, despite reporting the case to the police.

“It’s sad that the criminal remains free within the community. He hasn’t been arrested and neither has his statement been taken. What’s the use of taking our statements, without taking the statement of the person who did this?” questioned the source.

The family said that medical reports show the young girl suffered extensive sexual injuries.

“The test report shows injuries to her sexual organ. The doctors explained the injuries with illustrations,” said the source.

A police spokesperson confirmed a report has been lodged with the police regarding the rape and sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl in Male’ City.

The spokesperson said the police were investigating the case.
