Maldivian who trafficked party drugs to Sri Lanka sentenced to seven years in prison

Ecstacy seized by Sri Lanka police from two Maldivians in 2018 valued at 10 million Sri Lanka rupees.

Colombo High Court has sentenced a Maldivian who trafficked party drugs into Sri Lanka to seven years in prison.

Sri Lankan news outlet Daily News identified the Maldivian as Zidhan Ibrahim. He was arrested on May 16, 2018.

Sri Lankan media outlets previously reported that two Maldivians were arrested with ecstasy, a party drug, on that date; a 19-year-old and a 25-year-old.

They were arrested during a special operation carried out by Sri Lanka Police’s Special Task Force (STF) in an apartment in Dhehiwala, an area where a lot of Maldivian emigrants reside.

The arrest was carried out during an attempt to sell the drugs based on intelligence received to Sri Lankan police. 1,925 pills of ecstasy were discovered on them. STF placed its street value at 10 million Sri Lanka Rupees (MVR 478,678).

Sri Lankan Police, back then, stated it was the largest number of ecstasies seized by STF to date.

They detailed that the drugs were trafficked from Netherlands while they were also trafficked the drugs to additional nations from Sri Lanka.

Sun has learned that Sri Lankan police launched an investigation into this case based on intelligence provided by Maldivian police.
