Duo sentenced to 20 years for gang rape of young girl

Two men were sentenced to 20 years in prison last week, after being found guilty of gang raping a young girl in Male’.

The crime took place near the national football stadium in Male’ City back in 2018, when the victim was under the age of 18 years.

The court issued its verdict last week, after a trial that stretched for seven years. The trial was held behind closed doors at involved a child victim, with details regarding the case withheld.

Both men arrested in the case were found guilty of rape, and issued 20-year prison sentences. However, they have around 13 years left to serve as they have been detained in the case since 2018.

Records show that the case also involved a suspect who was a minor at the time. However, it is unclear if he was formally charged.

The brutal crime had sparked violence in Male’ City, as vigilante groups went out in search of the rapists, who later surrendered themselves to the police.
